In God We Trust: Faith

In God We Trust: Week 2: Faith

Trusting God isn’t just something we say—it’s something we demonstrate through faith. When the disciples faced storms, uncertainty, and impossible circumstances, Jesus invited them to trust His direction, protection, and invitation.

This week, we’ll discover what it means to step out of the “boat” of comfort, control, and security and follow Jesus by faith—even when we don’t know the outcome.

    “Getting Out Of The Boat”

Faith sounds exciting…until it requires movement.

We love the idea of trusting God when it’s inspirational, comfortable, and safe. But biblical faith almost always requires stepping into uncertainty.

In John 6, the disciples are coming off an incredible moment. Jesus just fed thousands of people. Momentum is building. Excitement is everywhere. It feels like everything is finally coming together.

And then Jesus sends them into a storm.

    That’s important.

Sometimes obedience doesn’t lead to immediate comfort—it leads to deeper trust.

    Trusting God’s Direction

The disciples probably didn’t understand why Jesus was redirecting them. From a human perspective, staying with the crowd made more sense.

But Jesus knew what they needed more than they did.

And honestly, we struggle with that too.

We want God’s direction to align with our preferences, plans, and timelines. But following Jesus often means trusting Him before understanding Him.

    That’s true financially.
    That’s true relationally.
    That’s true spiritually.

    Faith says:
“Even if I don’t fully understand where God is leading me, I trust Who is leading me.”

    Storms Don’t Mean God Left

One of the biggest misconceptions about following Jesus is believing obedience guarantees smooth sailing.

But the disciples obeyed Jesus and still ended up in a storm.

There are storms of correction, and there are storms of perfection. Sometimes God uses storms not to punish us—but to grow our trust in Him.

    Maybe your storm looks like:

    • Unexpected expenses

    • Anxiety

    • Relationship tension

    • Fear about the future

    • Health struggles

    • Uncertainty

    Fear says:
    “We’re in trouble.”

    Trust says:
“God has been faithful before, and He’ll be faithful again.”

The Boat You Need To Leave

Peter’s story reminds us that anybody can watch—but faith walks.

The boat was safe. Predictable. Familiar. But Jesus was outside the boat.

And sometimes we stay stuck because we trust comfort more than calling.

    Maybe your “boat” is:

    • Comfort

    • Control

    • Reputation

    • Security

    • Hidden sin

    • Fear of failure

Faith means stepping toward Jesus even when outcomes aren’t guaranteed.

    It means:

    • Serving before you feel ready

    • Sharing your faith publicly

    • Being generous before it makes sense

    • Leading when you feel inadequate

    • Letting go of control

You don’t have to know everything before obeying.

You just need enough faith to take the next step.

Because while boats feel safe, they were never meant to become permanent homes.

Jesus is still calling people to step out and trust Him.
