In God We Trust: Give

In God We Trust: Week 1: Give

We all trust something. For many people, trust is tied to money, control, or security. But in John 6, Jesus takes a small lunch from a boy and feeds thousands—showing us that what we have is already in God’s hands.

This week, we’ll discover what it means to trust God as our provider, give out of what we do have instead of what we wish we had, and believe that God can multiply what we surrender to Him.

“Trusting God With What’s In Your Hands”

There’s a phrase stamped onto every piece of American currency: In God We Trust.

But if we’re honest, many of us live more like:
    “In money we trust.”
    “In comfort we trust.”
    “In control we trust.”
    “In ourselves we trust.”

The real test of trust isn’t what’s printed on our money—it’s how tightly we hold onto it.

In John 6, Jesus performs one of His most famous miracles: feeding more than 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish. But before the miracle happens, Jesus asks a question that reveals something deeper happening beneath the surface.

“Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” (John 6:5)

The Bible tells us Jesus already knew what He was going to do. The question wasn’t about bread. It was about trust.

Philip immediately starts calculating. He’s thinking financially, logically, practically. And honestly? Most of us would do the same. We immediately think about limitations:

    • “I don’t have enough.”

    • “I can’t afford it.”

    • “I’m not ready.”

    • “Maybe later.”

But Jesus wasn’t asking them to figure it out. He was asking them to trust Him.

    God Is The Source

One of the biggest spiritual shifts we can make is realizing that God is our provider—not our paycheck, not our savings account, not our ability. Yes, we work hard. Yes, we steward wisely. But everything we have ultimately comes from Him.

So often we operate from scarcity instead of surrender.

    We tell ourselves:

    • “When I make more money, then I’ll be generous.”

    • “When life settles down, then I’ll serve.”

    • “When I feel stronger spiritually, then I’ll step out in faith.”

But faith rarely waits for ideal conditions.

The little boy in John 6 didn’t wait until he had more. He simply offered what he had. No backup plan. No reserve stash. Just surrendered trust.

    That’s what faith looks like.

    God Multiplies What We Surrender

Jesus took the loaves and fish, blessed them, and multiplied them beyond what anyone thought possible. Not only was everyone fed—there were leftovers. Twelve baskets full.

    That’s who Jesus is.

    He multiplies surrendered things:

    • Bread

    • Fish

    • Faith

    • Obedience

    • Generosity

    • Availability

God can do more with your surrendered “little” than you can do with your controlled “lot.”

Sometimes the miracle starts the moment we stop waiting and start trusting.

    What’s In Your Hands?

Maybe for you this message isn’t even about money. Maybe it’s:

    • Time

    • Forgiveness

    • Leadership

    • Serving

    • Trusting God with your future

    • Taking a spiritual step you’ve delayed

The question isn’t whether you have enough.

    The question is:
Will you trust God with what you already have?

Because often the miracle is already sitting in your hands.
