The Naked Truth: about Sex and sexuality
Week 4: The Naked Truth About Sex and Sexuality
God created sex, which means He also created its purpose and design. In Week 4 of The Naked Truth, we look at what happens when we trade God’s truth for our own desires, why His boundaries are meant for our good, and how Jesus offers forgiveness, healing, hope, and freedom when our lives haven’t reflected His design.

The Naked Truth About Sex
Few subjects reveal the tension between culture and biblical truth quite like sex. Our world has plenty to say about sexuality, relationships, identity, and desire, and much of the message comes down to one idea: if something feels right to you, you should be free to pursue it. But Romans 1 challenges us with a different question. What happens when what we desire is different from what God designed?
Paul describes humanity as making a trade: “They traded the truth about God for a lie.” That idea reaches far beyond sexuality, but Romans 1 shows us how clearly it affects this part of our lives. When we begin with ourselves instead of our Creator, we eventually exchange God's design for our own. The trade may initially feel like freedom, but God's Word warns that every choice eventually takes us somewhere.
To understand the biblical view of sex, we first have to recognize that sex was God's idea. It isn't dirty, shameful, or something God reluctantly tolerates. He created it with purpose and called His creation good. From the beginning, Scripture describes men and women as intentionally created in the image of God and presents sexual intimacy as part of the covenant relationship between a husband and wife. Genesis 2 describes a man and woman being joined together and becoming “one flesh”—a picture Jesus Himself reaffirmed in Matthew 19.
Within that design, sex has several beautiful purposes. It creates intimacy and unity between a husband and wife. It was created for pleasure and joy. It also carries the incredible ability to create life. And before sin entered the world, Genesis tells us Adam and Eve were naked without shame. There was openness, trust, purity, and intimacy. The problem was never God's gift. The problem came when sin distorted what God had created.
That's where the conversation becomes challenging because our culture has normalized many expressions of sexuality that fall outside the boundaries Scripture establishes. The sermon notes address same-sex relationships, sex outside of marriage, adultery, pornography, and the exploitation found within the sex trade. While these issues can look very different from one another, the biblical question underneath them is the same: Who gets to define what sex is for—the Creator or the created?
Romans 1 takes that question even deeper by showing that sexual sin isn't ultimately just about sex. It is about worship. Whenever we know what God says but decide our desires deserve greater authority, we place ourselves in God's position. We begin asking God to affirm what we want instead of allowing Him to shape what we want. That is the same temptation humanity has faced from the beginning: the belief that we know better than the One who created us.
God's boundaries, however, aren't intended to keep something good from us. They exist because He knows where our choices lead. Scripture repeatedly shows that stepping outside God's design carries consequences. Some are immediate; others develop slowly over time. Forgiveness is always available, but forgiveness doesn't necessarily erase every earthly consequence of our choices. God's commands aren't meant to rob us of joy—they are intended to lead us toward the life, intimacy, trust, and freedom He designed for us.
But this conversation cannot end with a list of what is right and wrong. If it does, we have missed the gospel.
Romans doesn't end in chapter 1.
The gospel is for people whose sexual stories are complicated. It is for people carrying regret, shame, wounds, temptation, or consequences from past decisions. Some have sinned sexually; others have been deeply wounded by the sexual sin of someone else. Some struggles are public and others are known only to God. But none of us approaches Jesus from a position of perfection.
Jesus consistently held grace and truth together. When He encountered the woman caught in adultery, He neither condemned her nor pretended her sin didn't matter. He offered mercy and called her toward a different life. That's the heart behind the naked truth: no condemnation and no compromise. Grace and truth together.
Maybe you've made some bad trades. Maybe you've exchanged God's truth for what culture promised would satisfy you. Maybe this part of your story carries more shame than you know what to do with.
Your past does not have to define your future.
God's design hasn't changed. His truth hasn't changed. But neither has His grace. Through Jesus there is forgiveness for sin, healing for wounds, hope for what comes next, and freedom to begin walking in a new direction.
That's the naked truth about sex: God's way is the best way—and when we've gone our own way, His grace still invites us home.
