Believe…I Am The Am
We live in a world where everyone seems to have their own version of truth. Social media, culture, friends, and even our own feelings constantly tell us what we should believe about ourselves and about God.
In John 8, Jesus cuts through the noise.
He tells the crowd:
"You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Then He makes an even bigger statement:
"Before Abraham was born, I AM."
Jesus wasn't simply claiming to be a wise teacher or spiritual leader. He was identifying Himself with the very name God revealed to Moses in Exodus 3. Jesus was declaring that He is God.
That's what makes this passage so important. Jesus doesn't leave room for us to view Him as merely a good person or inspiring example. He forces us to answer a question:
Who do we believe He is?
Jesus also reveals that the greatest form of bondage isn't physical—it's spiritual. Sin promises freedom but ultimately creates chains. Pride, greed, bitterness, lust, and fear all promise something they can never truly deliver.
The enemy's greatest weapon has always been deception. He convinces us that lies are truth and that temporary things will satisfy our deepest needs.
But Jesus offers something different.
He doesn't simply give truth. He is Truth.
That means freedom isn't found in better information or self-improvement. Freedom is found in a relationship with Jesus.
Every day we're listening to voices that shape our lives. The question isn't whether someone is influencing us. The question is: Which voice are we trusting?
The enemy traffics in lies. Jesus speaks truth.
And the life we experience will often be shaped by which voice we choose to believe.
