Woman at the well
Connect:
People Watching Begin the session by inviting group members to share a brief story about a time they noticed someone in a public setting who seemed out of place or in need. This could be someone with too many items in the express checkout lane, someone listening to media without headphones, or any other scenario. Discuss what assumptions might be made about these individuals and how Jesus might see them differently.
Discussion Questions:
1. What are some assumptions we often make about people based on their outward appearance or actions?
2. How might Jesus' perspective differ from ours when He sees people in need or out of place?Discover: Breaking Down the Sermon
Scripture Focus: John 4:1-42
1. Jesus' Pursuit: Discuss how Jesus intentionally went out of His way to meet the Samaritan woman at the well. What does this tell us about His character and His desire to reach those who feel unloved or ashamed?
- Why do you think Jesus chose to engage with the Samaritan woman despite cultural and social barriers?
- How does this story illustrate Jesus' pursuit of us in our own lives?
2. Living Water: Explore the concept of living water that Jesus offers. How does this metaphor speak to our deepest needs and desires?
- What does the living water represent in the context of the Samaritan woman's life and in our lives today?
- How can we identify the "wells" we keep returning to that leave us unsatisfied?
3. Transformation and Freedom: Reflect on the immediate change in the Samaritan woman after her encounter with Jesus. How does Jesus' offer of grace and truth lead to transformation?
- What impact did Jesus' knowledge of the woman's past have on her response to Him?
- How can we experience similar freedom and transformation in our own lives?Respond: Practical Steps
1. Embrace Jesus' Pursuit: Recognize that Jesus is actively pursuing you, regardless of your past or present circumstances. Take time this week to reflect on areas where you feel unloved or ashamed and invite Jesus into those spaces.
2. Seek the Living Water: Identify the temporary "wells" you turn to for satisfaction and make a conscious effort to seek fulfillment in Jesus instead. Consider setting aside time each day to pray and ask for the Holy Spirit's guidance and refreshment.
3. Live in Freedom: Acknowledge any secrets or sins you are holding onto and bring them to Jesus for healing and freedom. Consider sharing with a trusted friend or mentor who can support you in prayer and accountability.
4. Share the Good News: Like the Samaritan woman, be open to sharing your story of transformation with others. Look for opportunities to testify about how Jesus has pursued and changed you, inviting others to experience His living water. -
