Daily Reading Week 5

Sunday

Joshua 7

  • What verse did you connect with today?

  • How does hiding sin hurt those around you?

  • What’s something from your past that you are trying or have tried to hide?

  • How does this chapter help you be “better?”

Respond:

  • If you don’t look at the greater context of this chapter, it can feel pretty harsh. However, inside of the context of the entire story of scripture, we have the opportunity to see the grace and truth of Jesus. The result of our sins is death, we should be punished for our transgressions just like Achan. BUT - because of Jesus taking that punishment for us, we now can have life through repentance.

monday

Matthew 3

What verse did you connect with today?

  • Take a moment and write down your definition of sin.

  • How do you prove that you have repented of your sins?

  • How do we not use our past as an excuse to sin? V.9-10

  • Repentance is our way of acknowledging sin and asking God to take it away from us. One way that we show that is baptism?

Respond:

  • Got questions describes baptism this way, “Christian baptism illustrates, in dramatic style, the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. At the same time, it also illustrates our death to sin and new life in Christ. As the sinner confesses the Lord Jesus, he dies to sin (Romans 6:11) and is raised to a brand-new life (Colossians 2:12)

  • Have you ever been baptized? If so what is your baptism story?

Tuesday

James 5:13-19

  • What verse did you connect with today?

  • What do you do in time of hardship? Joy? Sickness? What should you be doing?

  • How do you see sickness and sinfulness pairing together here? (V.15)

  • When is the last time you repented of your sins and confessed to a brother/sister? Why is that practice beneficial?

Respond:

  • Take a moment this morning to write out a prayer of repentance and confession. We need to recognize the faults that we have in our lives.

  • At the end of the prayer, thank Jesus for his death, wiping our slate clean if we choose to follow him.

wednesday

Psalm 51

  • What verse did you connect with today?

  • Have you ever been in a sense of mourning due to sin like David in this passage?

  • Where have you seen God’s great compassion?

  • What was the emotional state AFTER experiencing that compassion?

  • What does the joy of salvation look like?

Respond:

  • The Cambridge bible says this, “The prayer for pardon is thus based upon God’s revelation of His character as “a God full of compassion and gracious, abundant in lovingkindness and truth; keeping lovingkindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty”

  • If you had that moment, what was that experience like?

Thurdsay

Joshua 11

  • What verse did you connect with today?

  • Joshua had every reason to fear his situation. What causes you to have fear?

  • How do you fight fear like God tells Joshua to in verse 6?

  • Where have you seen God give you victory?

Respond:

  • The Pulpit commentary says this, “And it is a well known fact that men of tried courage are often daunted by unaccustomed dangers. Therefore all Joshua's strength of mind was required to inspirit even men who had experienced God's wonderful support at the passing of the Jordan, at the siege of Jericho, at the battle before Gibeon, now that they were face to face with the unwonted spectacle of a vast host, furnished with all the best munitions of war known to that age. The Israelites had nothing to depend upon but their own tried valour, and the reliance they felt upon God's support.”

  • How does your confidence effect others?

friday

  • How have you seen God move in your history?
