Better + Brighter: Be Discerning

Better + Brighter: week 11: BE DISCERNING

Jesus calls us away from judgment and into discernment. A critical spirit divides, but a discerning heart brings clarity and restoration. When we examine ourselves first, draw close to people, and respond with grace and truth, we reflect the heart of Jesus and make the world better and brighter.

  • Week 11 - BE DISCERNING

    Matthew 7:1–6

Few teachings of Jesus are quoted more than “Do not judge.” Yet many misunderstand what He meant. Jesus wasn’t calling us to ignore truth—He was calling us to reflect His heart.

There’s a difference between judgment and discernment.

Judgment pushes people away. It assumes motives, reacts quickly, and elevates our own righteousness. Discernment, however, draws people closer. It seeks understanding, values truth, and moves with humility.

Jesus uses a powerful image: the speck and the log. We often magnify the faults of others while minimizing our own. But real spiritual maturity begins with self-examination. When we invite God to search our hearts first, we begin to see clearly.

Discernment also requires proximity. You cannot truly understand someone from a distance. Jesus modeled this beautifully—He got close to people. He listened, observed, and responded with wisdom. He discerned what people needed, not just what they deserved.

And when clarity comes, discernment acts responsibly. Sometimes it means gently restoring someone. Other times it means setting boundaries. Either way, the goal is always love and truth working together.

A better and brighter life isn’t built by criticizing others—it’s built by becoming more like Jesus. When we trade judgment for discernment, we become people who bring light instead of heat.
